The Compounding Centre combines the skills of pharmaceutical knowledge and state-of-the-art technology to allow our specially trained pharmacists to prepare compounded medications which are not commercially available. Medication compounding allows us to meet our patients’ unique needs.
At one time, nearly all medications were compounded from scratch by mixing individual ingredients together in the exact strength and dosage form specified by the healthcare provider. With the advent of mass pharmaceutical manufacturing in the 1960’s, compounding pharmacies rapidly declined. The Pharmacist role as a compounder and mixer quickly changed to that of a dispenser of ready-made drugs by big pharmaceutical manufacturers and most pharmacists were no longer skilled in medication mixing.
However, the “one-size-fits-all” approach meant that some patients lacked proper therapy and needed the care of a compounding pharmacist.
Fortunately, compounding has regained popularity lately as modern technology, innovative techniques and research have allowed more compounding pharmacies to customize medications to meet their patients’ distinctive needs.
